The site of the continent's first Spanish colony, Cartagena retains much of its colonial flavor thanks to a World Heritage-listed old town, encircled by old walls and protected by imposing fortresses.
Take a break from the city and head to Aviario Nacional de Colombia and Playa Puntilla. Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Barrio Getsemani and Monumento a Los Zapatos Viejos. Go for a jaunt from Cartagena to Isla Baru to see Playa Blanca about 1h 5 min away. And it doesn't end there: don't miss a visit to Plaza de La Trinidad, take in the architecture and atmosphere at Sanctuary of Saint Peter Claver, and look for gifts at La Casa del Joyero.
