Founded in 1535 by Spanish explorer Francisco Pizarro, Lima represents an interesting blend of modern attractions and preserved colonial architecture, much of it clustered in the World Heritage-listed city center.
Museo de la Nacion and Centro Historico de Lima are good opportunities to explore the local culture. Step off the beaten path and head to Marcahuasi and AMANO, Museo Textil Precolombino. There's still lots to do: admire the local landmark of Plaza de Armas (Plaza Mayor), see the interesting displays at Museo Oro del Peru, take a stroll through Barranco, and contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Church and Sanctuary of Saint Rose of Lima.
