Alcalá de Henares, meaning Citadel on the river Henares, in Arabic قلعة النار, is a Spanish city located 35km northeast of the country's capital, Madrid. You'll explore the less-touristy side of things at Parque Europa and Calle Mayor. Bring the kids along to Museo Casa Natal de Cervantes and Parroquia De San Nicolás El Real. Get out of town with these interesting Alcala De Henares side-trips: Puerta de Santa Maria (in Hita), Bodegas Finca Rio Negro (in Cogolludo) and Iglesia de la Magdalena (in Torrelaguna). Next up on the itinerary: take in the architecture and atmosphere at Monasterio de las H.H. Clarisas, step into the grandiose world of Palacio Antonio de Mendoza - Convento de la Piedad, learn about winemaking at Bodega Calzadilla, and appreciate the extensive heritage of Romana de Complutum.

To find maps and tourist information, go to the Alcala De Henares online journey builder.

If you are flying in from Ireland, the closest major aiport is Adolfo Suárez Madrid–Barajas Airport. In January, plan for daily highs up to 13°C, and evening lows to 1°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 26th (Sun) so you can drive to Madrid.
