The site of the continent's first Spanish colony, Cartagena retains much of its colonial flavor thanks to a World Heritage-listed old town, encircled by old walls and protected by imposing fortresses.
Start off your visit on the 21st (Sat): steep yourself in history at Walled City of Cartagena, then step into the grandiose world of Castillo de San Felipe de Barajas, and then admire the landmark architecture of Las Bovedas. On the 22nd (Sun), you'll have a packed day of sightseeing: take in the architecture and atmosphere at Sanctuary of Saint Peter Claver, steep yourself in history at Plaza Santo Domingo, don't miss a visit to Plaza Bolivar, steep yourself in history at Torre del Reloj, then contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Convent of Santa Cruz de la Popa, and finally make a trip to La Popa Monastery.

Washington DC, USA to Cartagena is an approximately 10-hour flight. You can also do a combination of train and flight; or do a combination of subway, bus, and flight. On the 23rd (Mon), head off the coast to Johnny Cay, then contemplate the long history of Plaza Canon de Morgan, then kick back and relax at Playa Charquitos, and finally look for all kinds of wild species at Cayo El Acuario. On the 24th (Tue), you'll have a packed day of sightseeing: take in the architecture and atmosphere at Primera Iglesia Bautista, then identify plant and animal life at La Piscinita, and then take in the dramatic natural features at Hoyo Soplador.

Colombia's heart and soul, Bogota has earned the nickname "Athens of South America" thanks to its abundance of universities, libraries, and lower-level schools.
When in Bogota, make a side trip to see Catedral de Sal de Zipaquira in Zipaquira, approximately 54 minutes away. Next up on the itinerary: examine the collection at Gold Museum (Museo del Oro), indulge your taste buds at Food & Drink, explore the world behind art at Museo Botero del Banco de la Republica, and make a trip to Monserrate.
