Often used as a symbol of Bristol on postcards and promotional materials, Clifton Suspension Bridge was designed by the celebrated Victorian engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel and finished in 1864. The bridge spans the Avon Gorge, linking Clifton to Leigh Woods. Designed for light 19th-century horse-drawn traffic, this landmark bridge still meets the demands of modern travel, with over 12,000 vehicles crossing it daily. Stroll across the bridge to see and photograph the ancient Avon Gorge and the city beyond it. On the Leigh Woods side of the bridge, you can drop by the informative visitor center to see a brief video presentation about the history of the site, as well as purchase books and souvenirs. Clifton Suspension Bridge reviews
What an amazing structure and a beautiful bridge. A great example of Brunnel’s creation. Masterpiece of engineering. A great Observatory nearby too. A must visit for visitors to Bristol. more »
I really don't like heights but as I was in the area I thought I'd challenge myself. The way over was awful and the way back even worse. My poor heart was almost bursting through my chest. Glad I did.... more »
One of Bristol's most beautiful landmarks with a rich history. The bridge is still fully operational today. Go and have a look. There is a very informative little museum on one site of the bridge with a small lift that will help wheelchair users go up to the second floor. The full history and how the bridge was built is on display. Stunning to see.
Brilliant piece of Bristol's history, definitely a must see if you're visiting Bristol. It's very close to Clifton village which has loads of brilliant shops, cafes and bars. And it's quite close to Leigh woods and the Downs if you fancy a long walk. The toilets close to there are a little grimy though.... I'd recommend using facilities somewhere else!
