Big Ben, London

4.5
#9 of 3,584 in Things to do in London
If you could only choose one icon to represent Great Britain, Big Ben would have to merit strong consideration. The name commonly describes the clock tower at the north end of the Palace of Westminster in London, but the title originally went to the bell inside the tower. The official name of the tower is Elizabeth Tower. UK residents can take a tour of the tower, going all the way to the top for spectacular views of London. If you're a foreign visitor, you'll have to be content with snapping photos from the ground. The clock tower is photogenic at any time of day, but even more so when it's lit up at dusk. • OK. I came to London and Big Ben is surrounded by scaffolding in its entirety less the clock that is working perfectly. What are you going to do. It is a lousy Tome now. It will need to be in 2020.

  • I loved it. I live and work in inner London and the thrill of seeing Big Ben (more properly called the Elizabeth Clock Tower at Westminster) never wears off. The renovations in progress should provide the necessary maintenance and upgrades to keep the clock and tower in proper operating condition well into the future. It is possible under normal circumstances to go on a tour of the inside and inner workings of the clock for those lucky local few who contact their MOP, but just being able to walk around the perimeter and enjoy the views is very worth while. Absolutely highly recommended, and should be on your bucket list if in the area.
  • Big Ben is one of the best historical building that ABSOLUTELY you must see when you are in London!!. The official name of the tower in which Big Ben is located was originally the Clock Tower, but it was renamed Elizabeth Tower in 2012 to mark the Diamond Jubilee of Elizabeth II. Big Ben is the nickname for the Great Bell of the clock at the north end of the Palace of Westminster in London and is usually extended to refer to both the clock and the clock tower.  Big Ben is well known place internally and being here just incredible, what a beautiful landmark!. Either day or night, many tourists in this area capturing the beauty of Big Ben. There are so many things to see in that area. Plan whole day here for sure. Enjoy your time in London.
  • Was being restored while visiting. Despite that, it still managed to look nice lighted up at night. Also, the surrounding area is great. Can be very busy. Post edit: Apparently it has been under construction for two years now, and will be so for two more years! A little disappointing that such an iconic symbol takes so long to restore.

  • Your first visit to London would be incomplete without seeing the iconic Elizabeth Tower (also referred to as Big Ben). If you plan your visit correctly, you can hear the Westminster chimes and Big Ben ringing at the turn of the hour, as it has done for nearly 150 years. Everyone knows the sound of Big Ben, hearing it up close is one of the most memorable London experiences. A great way to spend a morning in Westminster is to arrive around 8.50 am so you can be around to hear Big Ben sound off at 9am. Then, you can make your way over to Westminster Abbey to queue for the opening at 9.30am. If you are in a group, one member can stand in the queue to enter the abbey, while the rest of your party walk across the street to Parliament Square to see the statues of important historical figures like Abraham Lincoln, Nelson Mandela and Winston Churchill. This takes around 5-10 minutes time. If it is sunny outside, you will have opportunity to take some lovely pictures of Elizabeth Tower with blue skies at your back as the light conditions are usually very good at this early hour of the day. Then it will be time to enter Westminster Abbey at 9.30am for your visit to this excellent historical attraction. Visits here will last 90-120 minutes, ending a great morning in Westminster, taking in two of London's most famous and iconic attractions.
