At Churchill War Rooms, see how Winston Churchill and his inner circle directed the British war effort from this bunker complex. In the Cabinet War Rooms, which served as Churchill's living quarters, look for the chair--with scratch marks on its arms--in which Sir Winston sat while strategizing with his closest advisers. The books, color-coded telephones, and documents on desks in the Map Room remain just as they were when the bunker emptied on August 16, 1945. Moving on to the Churchill Room, see where Churchill slept while in the bunker. In the Churchill Museum, learn all about the life of the leader who guided Britain through one of the most trying periods of its history. The site does not have a cloakroom, so expect to carry or wear whatever you bring with you. As a WWII history buff, this was a can't miss for me and it was worth it. So cool to see all the rooms that were used during WWII to defeat the Nazis while they were being bombed overhead. Didn't do t...  more »

In the beginning when I realised we had to pay 19 pounds to get in I was going to leave, but to be honest it was worth it. The detail and the history behind everything there is fascinating. The audio ...  more »

There is so much information on Churchill and the war that you could spend 1-2 hours at the museum. There were photos from the war. This was the actual location of the bunker.  more »

  • This place is definitely worth the visit. You need about 5 hrs. So educational and very interesting. Doesn't feel like your so far underground. Should have bought the membership. So worth it.
  • One of the only paid museums I visited, I would say it's interesting and it doesn't take too long if following the audio guided tour but it's definitely a one time visit for me. Gives very interesting information on life in the bunker and describes some of the more personal details of Winston Churchill but I much preferred the other Imperial War Museum London which was free and had an excellent overview of World War 1 and 2.
  • Absolutely loved this museum! It is a must see if you are a WWII history nerd. Audio guide is super informative and historical presentation of rooms in the bunker was great. They also have an interactive museum area to lean more about Churchill and other aspects of the British involvement in the war.
  • If you haven't been to the Imperial war museum's war rooms at Whitehall, then you should, they added the Churchill museum a couple of years back which has made the visit much more interesting and interactive as they use technology to bring it alive. Free audio guides are included and you could easily spend two hours getting lost in what it was like during the war and learning about Churchill. Don't miss the the cafe, it is just after the PM's kitchen. In a side note, become a friend and support them for the future and you will have access to all their sites and exhibitions for free.
  • Well worth a visit. History of the actual war rooms used during the second world war. Walk round at your own pace. Audio commentary in multiple languages. Get to see more about the life of Wonston Churchill too.

Where to stay in London

Many of London's main attractions are spread out, so nearby public transportation is key. There is no downtown area as such in London, and some of the least expensive hotels have more convenient access to tourist sites than the costlier ones. For a quintessential London experience, consider staying in the West End. This part of town offers excellent theaters, historical sites, and eating and shopping options for every taste. Lodging won’t be cheap, but you’ll have the colorful variety of London life right at your doorstep. Look at Notting Hill or Chelsea for charming and less expensive boutique hotels and B&Bs.
