National Gallery, London

4.6
#2 of 2,395 in Museums in United Kingdom
National Gallery houses one of the world's best collections of western European art. You can find larger collections at other galleries, but the roughly 2,300 paintings here comprehensively cover major art movements from the 13th to the 19th centuries. You'll encounter numerous important works, such as Hans Holbein's The Ambassadors, Van Gogh's Sunflowers, and Constable's The Haywain. Take a floor plan as soon as you enter the gallery, and consider picking up a free audio guide that explains the significance of the works you'll see. A handful of different themes are available, including the Collection Tour, which provides commentary on more than 1,000 works, and a 60-minute tour of the highlights. The British public owns the art in the permanent exhibit, so admission is free. Temporary exhibits, however, have fees. The gallery also offers three venues for food and drink. A visit to National Gallery represents just the start of the adventure when you use our London vacation trip planner to plot your vacation.

London can be expensive, but there are many free attractions. The gallery can be busy, especially around Van Gogh's sunflowers, but there is plenty of space to spread out. There are great paintings by...  more »

  • Just a great gallery with a wide range of paintings from many different time periods. Especially loved seeing some Rembrandt pieces. Spent a good part of two days here and there's still more to see. But I am a bit of an art nerd who spends a lot of time looking at each piece.
  • If you love Art and History take the time to stroll through this museum. A wonderful place to spend the day, take a break from the weather or appreciate the amazing works of art. Something for everyone. Very closely located to Portrait Gallery and famous Square. Free or donation to enter. A great place to go while visiting on a budget.
  • A great gallery with real masterpieces. Unfortunately we could not see the Impressionists because this part was closed. I'm delighted by Jan van Eyck, just brilliant. I also liked the work of Rubens and especially Rembrandt.
  • Amazing place! I felt like I could spend a month in this museum and still not able to look at and understand all the artifacts present here. It has galleries related to Egyptian civilization, Greeks, Romans, watches, Japanese culture, US, Africa etc. You can buy souvenirs here too. The entry to this museum is free. Must visit place in London if you are interested in understanding history and culture.
  • It is amazing here. A lot of different art that you may you didn't know you liked. I would recommend about 2-3 hours for the whole gallery to see. If you don't like to stand for hours on each painting then you can do it all in about an hour. Definitely recommend it as it is also FREE!

Where to stay in London

Many of London's main attractions are spread out, so nearby public transportation is key. There is no downtown area as such in London, and some of the least expensive hotels have more convenient access to tourist sites than the costlier ones. For a quintessential London experience, consider staying in the West End. This part of town offers excellent theaters, historical sites, and eating and shopping options for every taste. Lodging won’t be cheap, but you’ll have the colorful variety of London life right at your doorstep. Look at Notting Hill or Chelsea for charming and less expensive boutique hotels and B&Bs.
