Old Spitalfields Market, London

4.2
#11 of 396 in Shopping in London
There has been a market on the site of Old Spitalfields Market since 1638, when King Charles I gave a license for flesh, fowl, and roots to be sold there. Today, Old Spitalfields is one of London’s top markets, offering antiques, clothes, organic food, artwork, and vinyl records. It’s particularly recognized as a place for young designers to showcase their work, and is considered very fashionable. As it’s a covered market, you don’t need to worry about rain. Once you’ve worked up an appetite from shopping, visit one of the stalls selling food, or one of the restaurants and cafes also in the covered area. • A variety of restaurants, street food, around clothing market. Interesting to visit and great atmosphere.

  • We did a market stroll on out last day in London which was also a Sunday (everything we read said Sundays are when most markets come alive). Old Spitalfields was pretty impressive. They had so much to...  more »

  • Haven’t been to Spitalfields for years and boy what a pleasant surprise. A great day out for foodies (which we are) and shoppers alike. There are some unique stalls to browse around - you are bound to buy something. The selection of different cuisines available is mouthwatering. We had the steamed buns with fried chicken on this occasion but going back next weekend with a good appetite to experience more. A nice mix of tourists and locals.
  • It's another place to add on your 'must go to' places for the vintage and fashion experience. Really buzzes with that market place tone of 'which stall shall I look at next?' and what shall I eat now apart from the salt beef roll and English breakfast tea in the corner cafe brimming with smiling customers. I know Eric, the talented musician amongst other things, is around to show you all the delightful stalls that sell jewellery accessories, handmade coats and leather items. Not to mention the reasonably priced fashion day and evening wear. And Ray the other wonderful talent who looks after the craft stalls. I sold my handmade soaps there until I found I was too busy working!! You'll go there to try and find vintage items but you'll be going to one of the cafes/restaurants around the stall area, to grab a bite to eat. The nearest tube station is Liverpool Street.
