Old Spitalfields Market, London

4.2
#11 of 366 in Shopping in London
There has been a market on the site of Old Spitalfields Market since 1638, when King Charles I gave a license for flesh, fowl, and roots to be sold there. Today, Old Spitalfields is one of London’s top markets, offering antiques, clothes, organic food, artwork, and vinyl records. It’s particularly recognized as a place for young designers to showcase their work, and is considered very fashionable. As it’s a covered market, you don’t need to worry about rain. Once you’ve worked up an appetite from shopping, visit one of the stalls selling food, or one of the restaurants and cafes also in the covered area. • Site with various nationalities foods. This amalgamation of flavors enriches the meal. Other than that there are stalls with various products and stores. You do have lunch and still buys what is missing. Is a big shed! Recommend for the food!

  • Easy to get to from central London & many stalls to peruse through and enjoy a pint or two at the restaurants. More like an outdoor supermarket or shopping mall (US term), but a very enjoyable afterno...  more »
  • Spent a Sunday morning here with 2 other couples for a browse round. Loads to see and do here and well worth a visit. Great for foodies, craft lovers and artists. A great way to pass a few hours.  more »

  • Haven’t been to Spitalfields for years and boy what a pleasant surprise. A great day out for foodies (which we are) and shoppers alike. There are some unique stalls to browse around - you are bound to buy something. The selection of different cuisines available is mouthwatering. We had the steamed buns with fried chicken on this occasion but going back next weekend with a good appetite to experience more. A nice mix of tourists and locals.
  • It's another place to add on your 'must go to' places for the vintage and fashion experience. Really buzzes with that market place tone of 'which stall shall I look at next?' and what shall I eat now apart from the salt beef roll and English breakfast tea in the corner cafe brimming with smiling customers. I know Eric, the talented musician amongst other things, is around to show you all the delightful stalls that sell jewellery accessories, handmade coats and leather items. Not to mention the reasonably priced fashion day and evening wear. And Ray the other wonderful talent who looks after the craft stalls. I sold my handmade soaps there until I found I was too busy working!! You'll go there to try and find vintage items but you'll be going to one of the cafes/restaurants around the stall area, to grab a bite to eat. The nearest tube station is Liverpool Street.
  • Nice market, good atmosphere and nice product's. Staff is nice and polite with good customer service skills. Service is fast when comes to payment. Store is well decorated and organized and easy to find desired items. Opening times are good, accessible on week days as well weekend's. Lots of choice with good quality and accessible prices . Market have good access and is well located
  • Great market with some good food stores for lunch. A bit expensive due to being in the centre of London next to a lot of offices. Best time to go is the middle of the day when the market is thriving. Unfortunately most good stores are outside and the ones that are inside are more chain brands or larger restaurants. Would definitely recommend you visit if you are in the surrounding area.
  • Amazing amazing! Great selection of foods, independent local shops and overall a great place to spend some quality time. A lot of vegan and vegetarian options available in almost every shop. Only complaint is there isn't much for kids to play or do. So avoid if coming with kids. However many restaurants have kid meals.
