Westminster Abbey, London

4.5
Ever since William the Conqueror's coronation here in 1066, Westminster Abbey has remained one of England's most important religious and ceremonial sites. Every English and British monarch after William also received his or her crown here. More than 600 monuments and memorials in the abbey honor famous Britons. The current building is over 700 years old. Note the many intricate details, including stained-glass windows, tapestries, monumental sculptures, and flying buttresses. Spend extra time in Poets' Corner, where poets and writers such as Rudyard Kipling and Charles Dickens are buried. After you finish walking around the abbey, head down to its museum. The oldest part of the complex, it contains many royal and religious artifacts and displays wax effigies of past monarchs. You can use a complimentary audio guide you or hire a verger (a layperson providing services to the church) as a guide for a small extra fee, an option which can provide rich context to your visit. For travelers who use our international travel planner, London holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the Westminster Abbey and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.

  • Online cards ordered (ca £ 5 discount) and need no long queue to get in. An audio tour is a must in order to get more information. It's busy but it was still possible to walk in their own pace.

  • We lucked out on our visit by arriving on a Wednesday where they offered later hours of operations to visit the Abbey. This worked perfect as we were in the area and honestly I'm unsure how we would h...  more »
  • Upon entering Westminster, you feel the history. The Abbey is beautiful but is its atmosphere to make it truly a visit not to be missed. The audio guide is free and very well done and listening you will learn quite a bit of English history. In my opinion worth every last penny required to enter.

  • This is such a special landmark in London and it's easy to see why. From the outside it's beautiful and quite imposing, but it's not until you enter the abbey that you truly appreciate the size of it. A good tip is to attend a free service to experience it in all its glory. We signed ourselves up early and got tickets for a Christmas morning service which was a really unique experience. Another tip is to see this beauty lit up for Lumiere London.
  • I really expected this to be a great visit, but was not prepared to be completely overwhelmed by Westminster Abbey. The place was not packed, but was easily has several hundred people in. The architecture and presence was equal to the great churches in the Vatican. The history and presentation is outstanding. The staff. Wow! Nice, professional, courteous. I really like the fact that every hour they have a short prayer and moment of silence to further establish that this was, is and will be a place of worship, not just some historic site. Fantastic.
  • I loved it and have thoroughly enjoyed the whole audio-guided tour! The experience you gain inside is unique. You will feel amazed at the idea that you are standing in the same spot where many great people have stood. Also, a lot of great people are buried inside such as Darwin, Newton, Bronte, Cromwell and many others.
  • Interesting church and not insanely busy during the off season. Attended a guided tour for an additional £5 which took us some places normally closed off to the public (eg the choir). It's relatively large and you could easily spend several hours, though I wouldn't recommend more than 2. No photos are allowed, and the docents actively enforce that.
  • Amazing place, plenty of historic pieces, and thumbs of great men and families. Some say it is hunted. You cannot make photos inside, its forbidden (not sure why), though I managed to make a pic from the door that takes to a small courtyard. Take a look at the thumb of James Cook, it is very close to where the queen sits. Also, it is interesting to see the old heraldic flags of the aristocratic families of England. Even there's a reference to Oliver Cromwell here. But not very good.. Please take the guided tour.
