Westminster Abbey, London

4.5
Ever since William the Conqueror's coronation here in 1066, Westminster Abbey has remained one of England's most important religious and ceremonial sites. Every English and British monarch after William also received his or her crown here. More than 600 monuments and memorials in the abbey honor famous Britons. The current building is over 700 years old. Note the many intricate details, including stained-glass windows, tapestries, monumental sculptures, and flying buttresses. Spend extra time in Poets' Corner, where poets and writers such as Rudyard Kipling and Charles Dickens are buried. After you finish walking around the abbey, head down to its museum. The oldest part of the complex, it contains many royal and religious artifacts and displays wax effigies of past monarchs. You can use a complimentary audio guide you or hire a verger (a layperson providing services to the church) as a guide for a small extra fee, an option which can provide rich context to your visit. For travelers who use our international travel planner, London holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the Westminster Abbey and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.

  • Online cards ordered (ca £ 5 discount) and need no long queue to get in. An audio tour is a must in order to get more information. It's busy but it was still possible to walk in their own pace.

  • We lucked out on our visit by arriving on a Wednesday where they offered later hours of operations to visit the Abbey. This worked perfect as we were in the area and honestly I'm unsure how we would h...  more »
  • Upon entering Westminster, you feel the history. The Abbey is beautiful but is its atmosphere to make it truly a visit not to be missed. The audio guide is free and very well done and listening you will learn quite a bit of English history. In my opinion worth every last penny required to enter.

  • One of the best attractions in London. The lines are long, so go early and buy your pass online. If you buy directly ahead of time, you can skip the long line. The London Pass does not allow you to skip the line. Once inside, it's an audio tour. The device was a little awkward to use, but it was very informative. There's lots of history as a chapel and burial location for famous people. The architecture is amazing.
  • The Abbey is a must see in London. The building itself is quite impressive, and even more so when you realize how many important people there are buried there (Charles Darwin, Isaac Newton, Stephen Hawking ... In addition to innumerable Kings and Queens). It closes very soon (last admission at 15:30), it is advisable to take the ticket online to avoid the queue. IMPORTANT: Photographs inside are not allowed. There is no apparent reason, since the employees themselves say that you can download high resolution photos of everything for free from their website (but we all know that it is not the same).
  • Evensong Perfection in every aspect from sitting in the Great Choir to visiting Iken Scholars to magnificent clean organ work and real and appropriate harmonic improvisation. This is a prayerful service attended and celebrated by only those serious about prayer, inward reflection, and worship. Arrive early for best seats and don't mess with the ushers who will assign you to stalls or cast you out into the chairs of the crossing.
  • My favorite thing about the Abbey was learning about the people who are buried there. Some of the deceased had their life stories or meaningful quotes inscribed on their tombs. Although not every tomb had one, some of the names of the interred were familiar historical figures. It was these small details that made me feel connected with an ancient marvel.
  • One of the most famous churches in the country, the gothic style Westminster Abbey has been the traditional place of the coronation and burial of British monarchs. It’s actually not technically an Abbey, but a ‘Royal Peculiar’, which is a church responsible to the sovereign. Take a visit to Westminster Abbey and marvel at the majestic detailed interior carvings and tapestries; it is very easy to imagine somebody becoming a King or Queen here!
