Battery Park, New York City

4.2
#5 of 37 in Parks in New York City
At the southern tip of Manhattan, beyond the busy streets and skyscrapers, is the green urban oasis of Battery Park. The park is named after the artillery batteries once placed here as the first line of defenses during the city's early years. Today the park gives locals and visitors a chance to enjoy lush gardens, take a leisurely stroll, and admire the Statue of Liberty. Many monuments, memorials, and historical landmarks are located in the park. Don't miss Castle Clinton, the early 19th-century fort that served as the U.S. Army headquarters during the War of 1812 and later as America's first immigration station. While the park’s location on the Hudson River provides excellent views, on a windy day it can be very chilly, so bring an extra layer. • It is a family vacation. Is the landing place for the goddess tour for free. There were squirrels. It was otherwise a normal Park. Place than here, with the aim to go?

  • I love this park! It is really beautiful. Walking around this park gives you a glimpse of the art, culture, and spirit of Manhattan. You can see modern buildings like the new glass towers of Lower Manhattan, classical buildings, half modern and classical buildings, and best of all, you can see One World Trade Center poking up above all of the buildings. The Statue of Liberty is clearly visible here, as is all of New York harbor. Helicopters take off and land, ships depart, and sometimes you can catch the giant Carnival Cruise Ships. The park is easily accessible and I would recommend a walk from the Trade Center to the ferry terminal to give you some weight loss and good views!
  • One of my favourite places in Manhattan... great park, nice size, and views of the Statue of Liberty and the Skyscrapers of Lower Manhattan. Easy access from South Ferry subway stop and lots of sites of interest and restaurants, cafes and bars around... Inside there is Castle Clinton, the old fort, as well as WWII and Korean War memorials...
  • Absolutely love sitting down here and enjoying views of the water, Statue of Liberty, boats coming and going, and the breeze coming off the water. The absolute best are the sunsets here! Stunning! All along Battery Park City as well. However the farther down you are the more likely it will go down over the water, whereas the farther up you go, the sun will likely be setting over NJ. They've planted flowers around the seating area along the water, and added an outdoor cafe. They no longer have the damaged sphere that was placed here after 9/11 though. It has been replaced to its original place, now by the Freedom Tower.
  • Fun park with great playground equipment, basketball courts, seating to enjoy a packed lunch or take out from nearby. Loved that it was fenced in. Culturally rich neighborhood. We crashed a neighborhood block party complete with music, bounce houses, good/drinks and had such a memorable day. Very warm and welcoming surprise on our daughter's birthday!
  • Battery park is beautiful and full of history. Come on down and visit. Right next to the Staten island ferry and trains and buses. Take a professional tour if you can to learn of all it's rich history about the park and surrounding areas.

Where to stay in New York City

The first step to finding accommodations in New York City is finding the right neighborhood. Manhattan, where most visitors end up, offers some of the most expensive rooms in the world, though there are lower-budget options, such as hostels with shared restrooms. Reduce your costs by basing yourself in one of the outer boroughs, but beware of low-end motels where you may end up sharing the premises with hourly customers. Alternatively, stay along the New Jersey shore, offering all the major chain hotels at considerably lower prices than their Manhattan equivalents.
