Chrysler Building, New York City

4.5
Known for its classic Art Deco architecture, Chrysler Building is one of the city's most recognizable landmarks. Located on Manhattan's east side, the 319 m (1046 ft) skyscraper, built in 1930, used to be the world's tallest building until the construction of the Empire State Building. Because it was originally intended to be the Chrysler Corporation's headquarters, the building has replicas of 1929 Chrysler radiator caps as the corner ornamentation on the 31st floor. Although much of the building is leased to businesses and unavailable to visitors, take a moment to admire the building's exterior and visit the lobby to get a closer look at the Art Deco details and the renowned ceiling mural by Edward Trumbull. • This is one of the top tourist destinations int he city. Conveniently located next to grand central its teeming with life. Although I have never entered the building I often wonder just what the views are like. But, since I'm not a tourist I guess I'll never know.
  • Historic, beautiful, and Iconic. Art deco masterpiece. Gota love the gargoyles as well!
  • Beautiful Art-Deco building and I actually like it more than the Empire. Very unique, they don't make them like that anymore! And with gargoyles :)
  • Very cool architecture, and friendly folks in the lobby who let you look around and know a lot about the history of the building.
  • Impressive building with shops accessible below, you can only gain access to the upper levels if you have meetings or reservations with the companies that are based here.

Where to stay in New York City

The first step to finding accommodations in New York City is finding the right neighborhood. Manhattan, where most visitors end up, offers some of the most expensive rooms in the world, though there are lower-budget options, such as hostels with shared restrooms. Reduce your costs by basing yourself in one of the outer boroughs, but beware of low-end motels where you may end up sharing the premises with hourly customers. Alternatively, stay along the New Jersey shore, offering all the major chain hotels at considerably lower prices than their Manhattan equivalents.
