Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum, New York City

4.4
Manhattan's military and maritime history museum, Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum houses a large collection of craft that includes an aircraft carrier, submarine, NASA's prototype space shuttle, and a supersonic reconnaissance plane. Originally opened in 1982, the museum underwent a 22-year renovation of its facilities, reopening in 2008. You can access it by public bus or subway, and spend the day journeying through the evolution of sea, air, and space vessels. The Space Shuttle Pavilion showcases Enterprise, named after the starship from the popular "Star Trek" TV series and built to perform test flights in the atmosphere, along with artifacts, photos, audio, and films covering NASA's space shuttle program. Try your hand at flying a supersonic jet by visiting the virtual flight zone, designed with cutting-edge multi-sensory technology. • We visited this museum on our trip to NYC in September 2017. We spent half a day here and amazing to see Concorde by the Hudson River as we live in the home of Concorde in Filton Bristol. The museum i...  more »
  • We were here on a very cold day. Most of the exhibits are inside. The deck of the ship is exposed to the elements and many different aircraft are parked there. We saw a space shuttle and learned about...  more »
  • Better arrive early to avoid long queues, did not go to the submarine, we had a long visit on the aircraft carrier that was more than enough for the day. Lots to see, lots to do with the kids.  more »

  • Going to this museum was great, I will thank Bank of America for sponsoring my ticket because of my Military status. This museum holds so much, it is great for everyone in the family. Be able to see the Enterprise Space Shuttle was awesome. The museum as bathrooms that are comfortable and has a small restaurant to get something while visiting. Just remember is NYC so everything is a little more pricey. I attached a couple of pictures from my experience. I recommend this museum for your next trip in NYC.
  • Fascinating museum. Filled with displays and allows you to walk through the gutted insides of the ship. There are multiple gun emplacements you can stand on. The flight deck has over 15 planes and helicopters with plaques explaining their creation, mission and country of origin. There is also a space hall that has a huge space shuttle inside of it. This is filled with interesting tidbits about the shuttle. Overall a wonderful trip if a little pricey.
  • We didn’t intend on doing the guided tour because it was additional money above and beyond the normal admission cost. We are extremely glad we just went with it and got the full tour. Mike was our guide and I don’t know if there is anyone that knows more about the Intrepid, it’s history and the aircraft on it. He truly was awesome. If I had known what the experience was going to be like beforehand we wouldn’t have even questioned the additional cost. Some of the other things the tour included were a ride up onto the aircraft deck from the lower level on the aircraft elevator. We were also allowed to go behind the ropes where the aircraft were and go right up to them. It was more like a VIP tour not just a guided tour. Would highly recommend and go again.
  • Very nice place to visit if you are military enthusiasts or anyone who’s interested in how military technology has improved. Very impressed about the technology that was realized more than 60 years ago. Visitors were from all different age range and nationalities. The level of details in the special Drone section was quite limited. I think it was meant for general public so the technology was not described in much detail. But surely a great place to see how drone has developed. Very very impressed and was grateful for such opportunity. I have already recommended this place to dozens of my friends. Thank you guys!
  • One of the worst museums. Entrance fee is $33 per person. Most of the displays are really dated. You are NOT allowed to see the concord. Closed! The space shuttle display is awful. A souvenir store is all it is. The aircraft carrier most interesting sections are closed. Fire safety I was told. Don’t waste your time or money on this museum!

Where to stay in New York City

The first step to finding accommodations in New York City is finding the right neighborhood. Manhattan, where most visitors end up, offers some of the most expensive rooms in the world, though there are lower-budget options, such as hostels with shared restrooms. Reduce your costs by basing yourself in one of the outer boroughs, but beware of low-end motels where you may end up sharing the premises with hourly customers. Alternatively, stay along the New Jersey shore, offering all the major chain hotels at considerably lower prices than their Manhattan equivalents.
