#7 of 65 in Museums in New York City
Manhattan's military and maritime history museum, Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum houses a large collection of craft that includes an aircraft carrier, submarine, NASA's prototype space shuttle, and a supersonic reconnaissance plane. Originally opened in 1982, the museum underwent a 22-year renovation of its facilities, reopening in 2008. You can access it by public bus or subway, and spend the day journeying through the evolution of sea, air, and space vessels. The Space Shuttle Pavilion showcases Enterprise, named after the starship from the popular "Star Trek" TV series and built to perform test flights in the atmosphere, along with artifacts, photos, audio, and films covering NASA's space shuttle program. Try your hand at flying a supersonic jet by visiting the virtual flight zone, designed with cutting-edge multi-sensory technology. Superb visit this floating Museum. It's a real dream of kid to be able to climb aboard an aircraft carrier and see all its willing legend aircraft next to the other.

I really enjoyed meeting the planes, and there are other attractions on the site that are really cool, as for example a space bus.

This is a very interesting and complete visit for aviation fans. The Museum is housed in a porta aircraft, which is very illustrative in terms of issues of military aviation and the life of the crew within an aircraft carrier. The Museum is complemented by a submarine, which can go inside, even the Museum staff can make them a photo of how the surface looks from a periscope. In the rear of the aircraft, it is a concorde from british airways, which can be seen from the outside. There is another Pavilion which houses the space shuttle Enterprise. Display is home to some aspects of the shuttle and even a ceramic tile can be found with which became evidence to demonstrate that this rupture was the origin that the Columbia disintegrated on re-entry to Earth. Another Pavilion houses an exhibition of drones, in the end, the shop sells some models to entertain themselves. The visit to this Museum takes approximately 3 to 4 hrs. You have to walk a lot, so you have to wear comfortable shoes. Another aspect to consider is that if it is a sunny day will have to wear something to protect themselves from the Sun. For the purchase of tickets, it would be advisable to buy them in advance since they can lose much time to buy them at the box office. Something that can help is to buy the New York Pass or some other similar, with this, avoids making rows at the box office.

This place is AMAZING. If you're a history buff, or into planes or space craft (I'm luckily all three!). Then you will love the Intrepid. I visited here on a tour of New York City this summer and I can't wait to go back. Even though I spent hours reading information and looking at exhibits, there is still so much more that I had missed. If you're in the area, this place is a must.

I love this place so much. It's a bit pricey for my student's family's and they should offer more discounts to students who come from title one schools, but we make it work. I love bringing my class here because they are amazed. They can touch the exhibits because just about everything is hands on. We never get a chance to finish the whole museum because of the time we gotta be back at the bus. But my student's thoroughly enjoy this trip and I'll continue bringing them

I visited this historical place with my nephews. I like the amazing journey. It's feel like I just traveled in past. As my father is a retired Navy person of Bangladesh, I like ships a lot. But this is massive. First time in life I saw three unbelievable thing at a same place - the carrier, the space shuttle and the submarine. I feel lucky enough to myself.

Went here on Memorial Day, so I'm guessing it was much more crowded than usual; but despite the crowds, we had a great time. Very informative with lots to see and do. The ship is massive and gives you some perspective into the daily life of those who spend their time out at sea serving our country. Highly recommend checking it out.

I don't particularly have a strong interest for military vessels, but my father used to take me here when i was a little girl. He passed away in October so I came back here as a nice way to remember him. It was very tourist-heavy, but it's presentation still held true after all these years, while now appealing to modern technologies with the drones and space exhibit. The Intrepid is a great way place to visit for families, always has been and always will be.

Where to stay in New York City

The first step to finding accommodations in New York City is finding the right neighborhood. Manhattan, where most visitors end up, offers some of the most expensive rooms in the world, though there are lower-budget options, such as hostels with shared restrooms. Reduce your costs by basing yourself in one of the outer boroughs, but beware of low-end motels where you may end up sharing the premises with hourly customers. Alternatively, stay along the New Jersey shore, offering all the major chain hotels at considerably lower prices than their Manhattan equivalents.
