Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum, New York City

4.5
Manhattan's military and maritime history museum, Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum houses a large collection of craft that includes an aircraft carrier, submarine, NASA's prototype space shuttle, and a supersonic reconnaissance plane. Originally opened in 1982, the museum underwent a 22-year renovation of its facilities, reopening in 2008. You can access it by public bus or subway, and spend the day journeying through the evolution of sea, air, and space vessels. The Space Shuttle Pavilion showcases Enterprise, named after the starship from the popular "Star Trek" TV series and built to perform test flights in the atmosphere, along with artifacts, photos, audio, and films covering NASA's space shuttle program. Try your hand at flying a supersonic jet by visiting the virtual flight zone, designed with cutting-edge multi-sensory technology. • We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to the intrepid and the 'growler' submarine. It was really interesting to walk about and see how the crew lived and the technology used, we were lucky to speak to some ...  more »
  • Where else can you stand on an Aircraft carrier, walk through a submarine and stand underneath the space shuttle. If you like engineering history this is a must for you.  more »

  • I was impressed with the museum's content and price. It entertained two families for nearly four hours in New York City for $30 per adult... less for children. With an aircraft carrier, submarine, space shuttle and history lessons to boot, good luck finding a better afternoon in New York. Also, take the time to visit the Bridge of the ship and the admiral's quarters to understand how differently warfare was exercised not so lo g ago - via paper maps and communication via vocal tubes... great stuff and very reasonable (in New York).
  • This was our surprise visit for my youngest kid. He was excited to see the space shuttle. So was I! Lots of planes and helicopters on the flight deck. My favorite SR-71 was there too. I was surprised to see there was an elevator here. That made it easy to get between the decks. We decided to have a bit of lunch here. The pizza was pretty decent. Better then I expected. A little pricey, but I expected that. Lots of shuttle history, and it is cool just walking around.
  • I was looking forward to this. I thought an aircraft carrier turned into a museum would be quite interesting. I guess you need a liking for it. A suggestion would be to only go on a day when the weather is nice, or you will get soaked and get less of a view. If you have trouble walking or going up steep stairs, then you should avoid the flight deck and or other difficult to get to areas. If you are tall like I am, then watch your head while walking through the hold. I enjoyed the historic side of it all.
  • If your in the area, this is the best experience you'll get for an aircraft carrier. It's not excessively set up for children except for the interactive area, so history nerds shouldn't get bored. If you want a better aircraft carrier, the USS Midway is much larger but of course isn't in NY. It might leave you wanting a bit more historic experience, otherwise it's great for a quick educational trip. There's also the space shuttle Endeavor there but half of the exhibit was closed.
  • So much to see! Spent well over 5 hours, and didn't quite get through everything. Didn't realize how big this ship was until I started exploring the different levels. There are beds everywhere, which made sense for a vessel that could accommodate 3000 crew. The submarine was pretty intimidating, but that's only because I felt cramped. Pretty well kept, considering it's one of the older ones. I also paid for the Concorde tour, which was a tad bis disappointing. Maybe because I'm a Concorde history buff and already knew most of what our guide was saying? The plane itself is very well kept. Didn't realize just how thin the fuselage was until I was sitting in the plane. So lucky to have had the opportunity to visit such a marvel of invention.
