In 2016, The New York Times called The Strand "the undisputed king of the city’s independent bookstores."History and descriptionThe Strand was opened by Benjamin Bass in 1927 on nearby Fourth Avenue, in what was known as "Book Row", which was established as early as 1890, and which had at the time 48 bookstores. • Great selection, lots of people ready to help. It's typically very busy and full of tourists so you have to not mind people bumping into you, but it's not so bad. Staff picks are pretty solid but rotate pretty slowly. Most of the categories make sense. The thing I miss from other bookstores are places to sit, but I understand this is more of a volume place than anything else. They also hold book talks and other events at their space.
  • Wonderful place to enjoy a rainy afternoon, reading and browsing the many many shelves. A book lovers favourite place! Great selection, ranging from classic and old books, to new and modern selections. Every genre imaginable, with a wide range of options in each one. Staff is pleasant and courteous, and extremely helpful.
  • This bookstore is popular at almost all hours of the day, a great spot for book lovers of the world. You can find almost every genre you could think of here and even some niche subjects you may have never thought of on your own. Come check it out, but don't expect to be able to sit and hang out reading anywhere. The layout of the store is designed to maximize space for their "miles of books" so you'll find it hard to find a seat.
  • This is the most magical place in the city. It has books. All kids of books and books of all price ranges. I can reliably expect to emerge with a book or few that Sparks my fancy. The staff is super helpful and the selection is marvelous, including not only books but knick knacks, mugs, and gift ideas!
  • What can I say! I love this bookstore they have books upon books ready for the picking. So, if you are a book lover this place would seem like a haven. You can find them also at a pop up location in Times Square, if they are still there. The apparel and souvenirs they sell is quite pleasing (you will know once there).

Where to stay in New York City

The first step to finding accommodations in New York City is finding the right neighborhood. Manhattan, where most visitors end up, offers some of the most expensive rooms in the world, though there are lower-budget options, such as hostels with shared restrooms. Reduce your costs by basing yourself in one of the outer boroughs, but beware of low-end motels where you may end up sharing the premises with hourly customers. Alternatively, stay along the New Jersey shore, offering all the major chain hotels at considerably lower prices than their Manhattan equivalents.
