Tenement Museum, New York City

4.5
#8 of 65 in Museums in New York City
To see America through the eyes of an immigrant living in New York about a century ago, visit Tenement Museum, a five-story brick building that once served as home to nearly 7,000 people from over 20 different nations. The museum promotes tolerance and provides a historical perspective on the immigrant experience, featuring exhibits built to depict the lives of those who lived here between 1869 and 1935. You can take a tour of the former tenement any day of the week, but to place the lives of immigrants in the broader context of the city's history, consider taking a walking tour of the entire neighborhood. Check online for availability, and take advantage of considerable savings by booking a combination tenement-neighborhood tour. Make Tenement Museum a centerpiece of your New York City vacation itinerary, and find what else is worth visiting using our New York City itinerary builder.

Pretty unbelievable the conditions that existed in this at one time middle class neighborhood. These people worked hard. They were tough. The tours are professionally led and quite interactive.  more »

We've been twice now--Hard Times and Shop Life tours--and cannot wait to go back! My daughters were 9 the first time and 11 the next, both times they said it was their favorite thing on our NYC vacation. The tours are informative and extremely interesting! They do an amazing job of showing you what it was like at 97 Orchard back in the day. Cannot recommend this place enough, to all ages.

Fabulous museum. This is,really how life was living in a tenement. The guides were terrific very knowledgeable. I would highly recommend it. It makes kids and adults realize how lucky we are to live in a time where your toliet is in your house or apartment and you don't have to share it with 20or 40 other person. It makes you grateful that you don't have a sweatshop in your living room. It's a good learning experience.

I really enjoyed this museum, and the opportunity to learn more about the immigrant experience. Be sure and buy your tickets ahead of time - hard to get if you just drop in. There are several tours, we did the Sweatshop tour. Our guide Olivia did a great job telling the story of the real people who lived and worked and made new lives in America. I plan to catch other tenement tours on future trips to the city.

By far the best museum in New York City. I went once and after that I fell in love. Became a member and then did all the tours. The only place that teaches you the history of this great city and the importance of the immigrants' contributions from all over the world. Combine it with Ellis Island and you will have the ultimate New York experience!

Amazing experience! We did two tours, the Sweatshop tour and Hard Times, both equally as amazing! Easily an afternoon and wonderful trip back in time. Pair that with the Eldridge Street Museum and you also have a day of learning about Jewish heritage at the turn of the century.

Where to stay in New York City

The first step to finding accommodations in New York City is finding the right neighborhood. Manhattan, where most visitors end up, offers some of the most expensive rooms in the world, though there are lower-budget options, such as hostels with shared restrooms. Reduce your costs by basing yourself in one of the outer boroughs, but beware of low-end motels where you may end up sharing the premises with hourly customers. Alternatively, stay along the New Jersey shore, offering all the major chain hotels at considerably lower prices than their Manhattan equivalents.
