Create an itinerary including Untersberg
Straddling the border between Germany and Austria, the summit of Untersberg offers spectacular views of Salzburg far below. The tabletop mountain has six different peaks with elevations ranging from 1,805 m (5,922 ft) to 1,973 m (6,473 ft). Take the cable car to 1,320 m (4,331 ft), or hike the well-marked trails to summit the mountain. Protected as a nature preserve, the mountain provides opportunities for outdoors activities, such as climbing and hiking. Follow the Nature-Quiz-Path to learn more about wildlife, mushrooms, minerals, and trees. Visit the ice cave at 1,570 m (5,151 ft), but dress warmly, as temperatures are below zero year-round. A visit to Untersberg represents just the start of the adventure when you use our Salzburg online holiday planner to plot your vacation.

  • We visited during December. Great for Snow in winter. There were short queues for the cable car. In summer it looks like a cool place to go for walking. The staff at the cafe is not great and clearly they have had enough of tourists. The shop at the top of the mountain only accept cash. Make sure you have enough as it is quite expensive from our perspective. Make sure you also get a seat early. Staff at the cable car awesome and friendly.
  • Date: 27/09/21 We took a public bus No. 25 from Vienna city centre to Untersberg (last stop). Then cable car up to the top. Originally wanted to hike down but the cable car staff said it is not recommended to hike down that day because the weather was not very supportive. Apparently it will take at least 2-3 hours to hike down which time we did not have then.
