Housed in an ornate palace, Natural History Museum (Naturhistorisches Museum) features a collection of artifacts that has been growing for the last 250 years. Emperor Franz I Stephan of Lorraine is credited with beginning the collection in 1750. Today, the museum is home to about 30 million objects relating to earth and life sciences. The first floor is dedicated to animal life, with exhibit halls focusing on vertebrates, crabs, arachnids, insects, mollusks, and protozoans. In the museum's mezzanine, learn about minerals, fossils, dinosaurs, the earth's history, and anthropology. The museum is best known for its dinosaur skeletons and extensive collection of meteorites. Don't miss the Venus of Willendorf, the nearly complete skeleton of a Stellar's sea cow, an animal that has been extinct for more than 200 years. • Absolutely amazing museum! The interior and exterior of the building is absolutely stunning and the museum contents/exhibitions are really, really good. We were fascinated by what was there and spent a good couple of hours walking around. It's not a huge place but the amount of items it holds do take a while to observe which of course, is not a bad thing at all! I'd 100% recommend to anyone visiting Vienna. Also, we bought tickets online so we was able to walk straight in (and avoid the small queue) which is nice so I'd recommend doing that.
  • I've recently been there with my parents. It's really, really nice to visit and fun for the whole family (old and young) to get to know so many species of rocks and animals. The venue itself is so astonishing with all that marble and statues. Bathrooms were clean, people at the entrance were very nice and the cafe/restaurant has good prices. The only thing we noticed is that some areas were very warm and some fresh air (even from windows, if possible) could have helped us stay longer, but apart from that, we loved it all.
