The cramped and inhumane conditions at Slave Huts at Orange Pan continue to serve as a grim but important historical lesson. Built in 1850 and scattered along the coast, these small huts served as bedrooms and a place to store belongings while the Dutch colony's slaves were working on the salt fields, separated from their families. You can easily visit on a self-guided tour, as informational plaques next to the huts provide insight into the life of the slaves in the Caribbean. • Admittedly the slaves had quite the view but knowing that half a dozen of them were packed in that hobbit-sized domicile is mental. The fact that these huts were maintained and shoved in the faces of tourists like us is admirable lest we forget how tourist destinations like Bonaire came to be
  • Historical site south side Bonaire. Huts were minimal in height, width & length housing 6-8 slaves in each hut along the beach.
