Create an itinerary including Cathedral of St. Peter and St. Paul
Climb to the top of the bell towers of Cathedral of St. Peter and St. Paul, which always ring at 11 a.m. rather than noon as a nod to a tale of subterfuge during the Thirty Years' War. Stone balconies that are nearly 84 m (276 ft) high offer views over the city. The cathedral was erected on the site of a much earlier Romanesque chapel in 1777. Its Neo-Gothic facade is the work of 20th-century architect August Kirstein. Look for a quotation from Matthew's gospel written above the main entrance, which invites all hardworking people to find peace inside the church. The Baroque interior is complemented with high ceilings and stained-glass windows. The cathedral also features a medieval crypt. • Known locally as Petrov, the Catholic Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul has a Gothic architecture and Baroque interior. What’s fascinating is that the bells are rung at 11 o’clock instead of 12. Legend has it that in 1645, after months of continuous fighting, the Swedish forces had set themselves a limit to conquer Brno by noon on the 15th of August. Some clever locals and spies changed the course of the Thirty Years War by ringing the bells one hour before noon. In consequence, the Swedish army retreated.
  • This cathedral has very beautiful style. I saw it during my holidays in Brno. Inside the cathedral there's a lot of ornaments to look at. The most interesting building in Brno Old Town.
