Sedlec Ossuary, Kutna Hora

An example of one of the more unusual ways to store and display human remains, Sedlec Ossuary is a small chapel located beneath what is likely the oldest cemetery in Central Europe. The ossuary contains at least 40,000 human skeletons arranged in bizarre shapes that resemble chandeliers, pyramids, crosses, and coats of arms. These strange chapel decorations, the work of a 19th-century master builder named Frantisek Rint, contain skulls and bones previously disinfected and bleached in chlorinated lime. A chilling reminder of the fleetingness of human life, this World Heritage-listed site attracts a quarter of a million people each year.
