A 19th-century palace, Schloss Hohenschwangau served as the childhood home of King Ludwig II. The castle was built on the site of a ruined fortress and quickly became a favorite hunting residence for the royal family. The interior of the palace contains numerous grand halls. They've largely been left in the state the royals would have enjoyed, with ornate period furniture and lavish wall murals. Many sections of the castle are open to visitors, but you need to make prior arrangements for a guided tour. You can arrive for your tour in royal style: A horse carriage starts at the ticket office in the village below the palace. Check online for tour options. Having visited to see Neuschwanstein in the past, it was nice to call in to see this one this time, and a lovely walk around the two lakes nearby.

Wow! Worth a visit for everyone. Again, you can't take any pics inside but plenty of photo ops outside of the castle and the surrounding scenery. My advice is get there as early as possible, past 10am it gets ridiculously busy. Tickets are timed so it's all very orderly. You can walk up to the castle, but I'd suggest taking the bus from the car park, you can then walk off to the right and go on the bridge, it's then a 5 min walk up to the castle. There's a shop, loos and lockers for bags. There are also loos once you're into the main courtyard. As of Aug '22 you need to wear a mask inside, but they do sell them at the info desk for €2 each. After you can walk down the hill or take a horse drawn cart (€4ea) but it takes the same amount of time. Plenty of options for eating and drinking around the car park. If you walk along the road past the car park, with it on your right, you'll be treated to an amazing blue lake nestled amongst mountains. Stunning.

Great tour and wonderful visit. We thoroughly enjoyed both the inside space and outside. Well maintained and ran like clockwork. I would advise anyone to buy their tickets online ahead of time - we purchased our tickets weeks in advance.
