Though much of Burg Meersburg, the oldest inhabited castle in Germany, is occupied by the descendants of Carl Mayer von Mayerfels, more than 30 decorated rooms are open to the public. Discover what the fortress would have looked like in the Middle Ages as you wander through the armory, bathhouse, kitchen, knights' hall, and dungeon. Important German poet Annette von Droste-Hülshoff lived here from 1841 to 1848, and you can see her living quarters and the room where she died. The tour includes access to one of the castle's towers with views of the Lower City and surrounding area. End your visit with a cup of coffee and a sweet from the onsite cafe in a grand Baroque hall. Guided tours are available in German. Audio guides are available in English. For travelers who use our international travel planner, Meersburg (Bodensee) holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the Burg Meersburg and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.

The most exciting thing about the visit was seeing the owners drive up to the castle in the smart car. The location is beautiful with amazing views, however the castle itself is overpriced. There...

It’s a very beautiful castle which dominates the little, pretty town of Meersburg; it’s very well-kept and rich of furniture. It’s a good way to learn about life in the Middle Ages.

Very interesting authentic medieval castle. Ancient rooms, weapons, knightly armor, minstrel music - I am very satisfied with visiting the castle. Tickets must be purchased at the gift shop nearby. By the way, for those who come from the countries of the former USSR and know Russian, they give a booklet in Russian. Pretty handy stuff. I recommend visiting the castle. It offers a gorgeous view of Lake Constance and the Alps.

This is one of the best locations in Germany to have a castle. The views are as good as it gets. The castle is good for families, since there isn't anything to read, you just walk through. With all the displays and artifacts, you get a good idea what life was like here. I especially loved all the weapons and furs.
