Pilgrimage Church of Wies became a pilgrimage site after the figure of the Scourged Savior began to weep tears in 1738. Local authorities converted a hasty chapel into a Rococo church in the late 1740s, hoping to make the supernatural visible. UNESCO recognized the church in 1983 as a World Heritage site. The setting, other attractions nearby, and the surprising size of this rural church make it worth the drive out here. This church literally is in the middle of nowhere. After taking off the highway, it took us another 15-20 minutes on a narrow curvy countryside road, suddenly the massive church came insight. It was beautiful with white and gold sculptures. The ceiling paintings were captivating. But it was so dark inside the church. It’s so hard to get clear view on either the sculptures or the ceiling. I wish it could have turned the lights on to make visitors enjoy its beauty more.

Beautiful church in a wonderful setting. You can get lost in the ceiling. Central to the church is a statue of the scourged Jesus. Originally in the small chapel in front it became pilgrimage site after the statue began to weep and miracles we credited to it. The current church was commissioned to accommodate the statue and pilgrims.
