Pearl of the Romantic Road
Founded in the 10th century, Wurzburg served as the home of powerful prince-bishops for many centuries. The city is renowned for an 18th-century grand palace called the Residence--one of the finest structures in Europe and a high point of Baroque art. Wurzburg is also home to one of the oldest churches in Germany, built in the eighth century atop a former pagan shrine. Though heavy bombing in 1945 destroyed most of its major buildings, much of the city has long since been rebuilt. Rather distinctive among German cities, many post-war Modernistic houses were erected right next to Wurzburg's most notable restored buildings. Though lacking an airport, the city has a good connection to the nation's expressway network. Thus, it can be easily reached from practically anywhere in Europe. Our Germany trip planner combines visitor reviews with your personal interests to make an itinerary informed by experts, but tailored to suit your style.
