The World Heritage Site of Erbil Citadel showcases a historic fortress perched upon a large 'tell', a mound formed by the site being constantly occupied since the ancient times. Excavations show evidence of the citadel’s inhabitation in the 5th millennium BC, and possibly even earlier, in the Neolithic Period. Exploring the maze-like alleys and antique buildings within the citadel’s stone walls, you will discover thousands of years of Erbil’s rich history and cultural heritage, from prehistoric times to the Neo-Assyrian and Ottoman eras. It was closed for a "private party" - so we weren't allowed to enter! Highly disappointed. We could only take pics from the street. It was beautiful - would've loved to tour inside.

A nice place to see the old side of Erbil. It gives you different perception of the city. No fees are needed. You might want to make sure to wear a walking shoes to be able to walk comfortably inside. Some works are still ongoing for renovations; thus you might be unable to access some parts. A cafeteria is available if you would like to have a quick warm drink.

Must visit if visiting the great city of Hawler. Historical, ancient monument in the centre of Hawler and one of the longest inhabited places in the world, first settled 6000 years ago. Great for photos and history nerds and contains a couple of museums and a gift shop. I went during the afternoon heat so it wasn't quite busy, but it is normally busy.
