Najaf
Najaf ranks among the most frequented places of Islamic pilgrimage in the world. Considered sacred by Shia Muslims, the city features a shrine to Ali ibn Abi Talib (600-61 CE), cousin and son-in-law to the Prophet Mohammed, and the first Imam after Mohammed, according to Shia belief. Religious trips to Najaf include visits to a central shrine and cemetery--often considered the largest in the world. Long known as a center of Shia learning and theology, the city sustained damage during the reign of Saddam Hussein and his Sunni-majority government, although its reputation as an educational and spiritual center has once again started to grow. With our custom trip planner, Iraq vacations can be built around trips to Najaf and other destinations in Iraq.
