Create an itinerary including Visoki Decani Monastery
One of the best-preserved Serbian monasteries of Byzantine and Western styles, Visoki Decani Monastery represents the largest medieval church of the Balkans and is designated a World Heritage Site. Established in 1327, it also features over 1,000 compositions and several thousand portraits of religious character, making it the largest preserved gallery of Serbian medieval art. See the white-and-pink exterior marble walls, and tour the monastery's dark, mysterious interior adorned with lavishly decorated portals and windows. You'll also have the chance to view the 14th-century wooden iconostasis and look for King Stefan's sarcophagus. The monastery is characterized by the eastern Orthodox Byzantine and Romanesque combination of styles, recognized as a significant artistic representative of the Balkans. • It's a wonderful monastery to visit. Lying between Gjakova and Peja it is easily accessible by regular and frequent buses going between those towns. You must take your passport and it will be held until you exit the complex and hand in your visitor pass. The guards are perfectly friendly and helpful. Photography allowed outside the church but not inside. Books with pictures available at 7 euro. Frescoes are the main event here and are fabulous. It's a 2.5km walk from the centre of Decani town where the buses stop. It is a town with all facilities.
  • Got the privilege of visiting the Monastery and seeing the beautiful grounds and amazing Frescos. Very peaceful grounds with good feelings. Highly recommend a visit. Amazing history and artwork. To be surrounded by so much history in one place is almost overwhelming.
