The Metropolitan Cathedral “Nativity of the Lord”, Chisinau

Bombed during World War II, The Metropolitan Cathedral “Nativity of the Lord”--the principal cathedral of the Moldovan Orthodox Church--offers insight into the country's spiritual life. Built in the 1830s, the building is of Neoclassical design, featuring rows of columns, bold lines, a large dome, and a stark white exterior. In contrast, the intricately and colorfully decorated interior boasts grand murals of religious imagery painted in blue, green, and gold across the ceilings and walls, and an array of finely worked gold. The cathedral has a separate bell tower, which was rebuilt in 1997 after its destruction in 1962 by communists. Visitors to the church are expected to dress modestly.
