Ancient fortresses and monasteries of Christian sects dating from the 10th to 14th centuries dot the valley, and were also carved into the limestone outcrops. The impressive cave monastery was carved into the rock in the 13th century by Orthodox monks, and was inhabited by the monks until the 18th century.
