Escuela de Espanol Colibri, Matagalpa

I spent 5 weeks doing one on one lessons and homestay with the folks at Colibri and it could not have been a more positive experience. Every single detail was perfect. From before I arrived in Matagalpa to the very last day of classes. The natural beauty, open air classrooms, personalized lesson plans and incredible staff made every day of classes memorable. During my time with the school I had two different profesoras, Diana and Marilyn to ensure I got variety in my learning experience. Both women were incredible mentors, full of local knowledge and a clear passion for teaching. I now consider them my friends. As for the home stay portion I could not have dreamed a better scenario. A quie, comfortable, and clean home with 3 meals a day full of nutrition and flavour. My host “mom” (because that’s what she ended up being to me) was the most patient, loving woman. She and her 10 year old grandson Bryan opened their home to me and allowed me to stumble through the learning process with the upmost respect. Both only spoke Spanish and as a result, I had 5 weeks of full emersion in the language. I should note that I was at Colibri as the events of the country’s current political crisis unfolded. The staff ensured my safety and comfort on a daily basis. I never once felt threatened or insecure and my home stay and walk to school each morning were always peaceful. While this was an incredibly trying time for the country as a whole, the staff at Colibri did everything in their power to make the school a haven for learning.
