Doini Island Skull Cave on Papua New Guinea island offers a look into the country's interesting past but features a lot more than that as well. The cave itself requires long uphill climb to see about 25 skulls of deceased village leaders lined up on a ledge, placed there as a sign of respect. When you are finished looking, head back down to the beach to enjoy spectacular snorkeling in the clear water among lots of tropical fish.     There are various reasons why skulls are kept in caves. On Doini its because people value their ancestors & like to keep them close by. In Rabaul skulls were prized as trophies of a warriors victims.....  more

    We went to this Island as part of a Princess ship tour. What a delight to meet such friendly people, and share the entertainment and way of life. The snorkeling was amazing. The reefs are undamaged...
