Home to the national capital Port Moresby, the vast Papua Region occupies the southern half of mainland Papa New Guinea. Port Moresby, through which all visitors to Papua New Guinea arrive, may not impress on entrance, but it provides a welcome dose of civilization before or after weeks in the nearby wilderness. The fascinating national museum and pretty nature park are both must-sees. In Western Province, Rusa deer, wallabies, and wild pigs graze in open grasslands, across which the Fly and Strickland rivers meander lazily, teeming with crocodiles and waterfowl. Once known for its cannibalism and head-hunting, Gulf Province is now a place to find intricate craftwork. Local craftsmen trade beautiful carved masks, bull roarers, headrests, skull racks, and gope boards. In cool, elevated Central Province, the world-famous Kokoda Trail begins, and the nearby national park is home to tree house-dwelling locals. Kokoda Trail ends in Northern or Oro Province, where tropical fjords, uncharted reefs, and sunken ships and planes make for fascinating scuba diving. Finally, Milne Bay Province, encapsulating the eastern tip of Papua New Guinea and several offshore island groups, offers island-hopping tours of palm-lined beaches, coral reefs and sandy atolls, thermal spas, and dramatic cliffs.
