Situated on the Kagera River, Rusumo Falls represent part of the most distant headwaters of the Nile River. Known for the view of the valley from the Rusumo Bridge, the falls also hold historical importance. The waterfall had a significant role in the history of Rwanda as the country hid all armor underneath the falls when Belgium took over Rwanda from Germany in late 1930s. Also, the falls are considered a memorial park, as bodies from the Rwandan genocide floated through this area during the massive slaughter of 1994 when thousands of refugees lost their lives as they were trying to cross the border to Tanzania.
