Thousands of birds populate Djoudj National Bird Sanctuary, a World Heritage Site wetland on the Senegal River delta. A wintering area for birds migrating from the Sahara, the park protects African spoonbills, purple herons, white pelicans, great egrets, and cormorants. You can take a guided boat tour to learn about the sanctuary's conservation efforts and get some up-close views of other animals residing here, which include jackals, warthogs, crocodiles, gazelles, and manatees. The sanctuary covers some 16,000 hectares (39,537 acres) and includes a large lake.
