For a classic train experience in the Alps, hop on Gornergrat, one of the highest railway lines in Europe. Opened in 1898, the railway takes sightseers and hikers from the resort village of Zermatt to the very top of a rocky ridge in the western part of the Alps. The first electric rack railway built in Switzerland, the line passes through a popular skiing area, noted for its 29 peaks reaching above 4,000 m (13,000 ft) in elevation. On clear days the line's terminus at the top of the ridge offers unbeatable views of the surrounding mountaintops, as well as the second largest glacier in the Alps. Our Zermatt trip builder app makes visiting Gornergrat and other Zermatt attractions simple, and helps you make a travel plan personal to you.

  • I was at Gornergrat in May, queue which took us upstairs was excellent. Unfortunately it was snowing at the top, therefore visibility was very poor. But it was worth going there anyway.

  • Took the train up to Gornergrat, it was a great day to have a great view of the mountains and Matterhorn, you can stop along the train ride to have a different view on the way up or down. Truly good.....  more

  • Really beautiful place where you can see in total 7 glaciers, the Gorner being the 3rd largest glacier in the Alps. There is a fabulous view of the Matterhorn and other mountains. I went for a short winter hiking route from Rotenboden to Riffelberg... I felt awe for the landscape.
  • Gornergrat summit is the must visit place in anyone's lifetime itinerary. Hop on and off the train on the world's first fully electrified cog railway. The view is breathtaking. A lot of view points you can take spectacular photos, go early in a day to enjoy your leisure exploration.
