Chisinau — 8 nights

Chișinău Etymology and namesThe origin of the city's name is unclear, but in one version, the name comes from the archaic Romanian word chișla (meaning "spring", "source of water") and nouă ("new"), because it was built around a small spring, at the corner of Pușkin and Albișoara streets. The other version, formulated by Ștefan Ciobanu, Romanian historian and academician, holds that the name was formed the same way as the name of Chișineu (alternative spelling: Chișinău) in Western Romania, near the border with Hungary. Step out of the city life by going to Trip to Moldova Day Tours and Nistru Beach. Step off the beaten path and head to Room Escape Games and Monument of Lenin. Change things up with a short trip to Sankt Ioan Botezator in Comrat (about 1h 45 min away). Next up on the itinerary: admire the landmark architecture of Triumphal Arch, take in the spiritual surroundings of Dormition of the Theotokos, take in the architecture and atmosphere at Orthodox Cathedral of the Transfiguration of the Saviour, and let your taste buds guide you at a local gastronomic tour.

As one of the smallest countries in Europe, Moldova earned its independence in 1991 and remains quite unknown to most of the world. As Moldova is located between Romania and the Ukraine, much of its culture borrows elements, such as language and traditional food, from its two neighbors. Moldova sports a rugged countryside with a mild and sunny climate thanks to the neighboring Black Sea. This region's outdoor activities--biking, hiking, horseback riding, and exploring caves--are its main attractions. While Moldova doesn't attract much tourism, it is one of the last places in Europe where you can get a completely authentic local experience.
