Durham — 59 nights

Durham is a historic city and the county town of County Durham in North East England. Attractions like Durham Cathedral and Durham Heritage Coast make great kid-friendly stops. Venture out of the city with trips to Barnard Castle (The Witham, Egglestone Abbey, &more), Darlington (David Mach's Train Sculpture, Darlington, Paddock Farm Nursery & Water Gardens, &more) and Hartlepool (Seaton Carew Golf Club, Teesmouth national nature reserve, &more). There's still lots to do: test your team's savvy at Escape Rooms Durham, admire the sheer force of High Force Waterfall, see the interesting displays at Beamish Museum, and explore the historical opulence of Durham Castle.

Largely calm and tranquil, County Durham features a landscape dominated by high hills and low mountains, noted for containing the highest ski center in England. For most of the last three centuries, the survival of the region depended almost entirely on coal mining. When the last coal pits closed in the 1980s, the scars left by the mining industry quickly started to fade, and the county reinvented itself as a popular tourist destination. Durham’s biggest attractions may very well be its ancient cathedral and the adjoining castle, once a seat of power for the mighty local rulers who defended the region against the neighboring Saxons and Scots.
