Create an itinerary including Avebury Stone Circle
Of the Pagan Neolithic henge monuments, such as Stonehenge, Avebury Stone Circle has the largest circle. It is still a place of religious importance to modern day Pagans, as well as a popular destination for tourists. The stone circles were constructed around 2600 BCE, but not all at the same time. Archaeologists believe that the circles were built slowly over the years, but there's no agreement as to their use. The National Trust manages the site and has been careful about maintaining its integrity by prohibiting development that would commercialize the attraction. However, you'll find two shops in the nearby village that sell gifts and hand out information: one is the National Trust's own shop, the other is a New Age shop that sells items related to the spirituality of the stone circles. • Free, beautiful and unspoilt. What more can be said? It has a lovely vibe to the place that is very calming and tranquil. Positives: You could probably park somewhere nearby for free, but...

  • An amazing place, mysterious yet accessible. A great place for strolling and thinking. There is a calmness here that is hard to find in the modern world (even though the megalith circle is dissected by a busy road). You may meet interesting people here, who (if you're lucky) will expand your knowledge and awareness of life, the universe and everything. Treat this place with respect. Take only photos and leave only footprints (on maintained paths).
  • Lots of parking and good toilet facilities. Easy to find. Well sign posted. Manor Gardens are well worth a visit and Red lion pub does yummy good. Stones them selves are large and impressive
