As host to over 15,000 varieties of plants, the vast majority of which are propagated on-site, we specialise in Rare and Unusual Shrubs, Perennials, and climbers, Japanese Acers, Old Fashioned Roses, and slow growing and Dwarf Conifers. For many of these varieties we are the country’s only suppliers as listed in the RHS Bible, The Plantfinder.

On site we have the renowned La Casa Verde restaurant offering a taste of the Mediterranean using the produce of Cumbria, with a terrace overlooking the gardens and onto the Pennines beyond,

Adjacent is Red Barn Art Gallery featuring contemporary British artists and sculptors working in a wide variety of media.

We also have the Lower Red Barn which stocks a huge range of unique and unusual glassware, jewellery, tableware, ceramics, wall hangings, candles, wall sconces, tapestries, soft leather bags and much more.

  • Many years since I visited, but I had a lovely overcast afternoon in the garden and the nursery, then delicious lunch on the balcony. Visited on a Sunday (also on Wednesdays) so the gardens were also open for charity. While not huge, it's small and perfectly formed, and blend seamlessly with the lovely nursery setting. I thoroughly enjoyed cauliflower soup and delicious pecan fudge tart on the balcony, bucket list ticked ☺️ Staff were all lovely, even the waitresses in training (at least one lovely young family member I suspect) and I was lucky enough to bag a thoughtfully provided throw so I could have the full Larch Cottage Lunch experience. Delightful, thank you.
  • Excellent nursery with a wide selection of plants and outdoor decor (you could literally spend a day here wandering the various aisles!) The restaurant is beautifully decorated and it's such a treat to be able to sit on the balcony under the wisteria and enjoy the view. The pizza and dutch apple cake were excellent and the menu has a good selection for vegetarians. The staff seemed a little overwhelmed the day we were there but they were still very attentive and friendly. I've marked down one star only because the cutlery and crockery were a little dirty and scratched. Otherwise a really wonderful experience.
