Shap Abbey was a religious house of the Premonstratensian order of Canons regular situated on the western bank of the River Lowther in the civil parish of Shap Rural, around 1.5 miles (2.4 km) from the village of Shap, in the Eden District of Cumbria, England. The site is in the care of English Heritage and managed on its behalf by the Lake District National Park.

  • Shap Abbey isn't easy to find, as it's at the end of a narrow road leading off the A6 at the North end of Shap village. Nestling in a valley, it's possible to look round the ruins at any reasonable.....  more

  • Lovely quite ruins which is in a secluded valley. We had the Abbey to ourselves which was special. Car park is small and road to it is narrow.

  • Lovely location, far from civilization. Hopefully not too much traffic in or out because passing is a problem 😂 impressive ruins, not huge but enough to stir the imagination for a while
  • I never even knew it was there but noticed a sign on my way to Haweswater ,some interesting ruins and the tower is still almost intact ,please note the road to carpark that holds about 4maybe 5cars is single track but I'd think some people perhaps walk or cycle there had tge place all to myself ,there are some information boards
